Most profitable skills to learn in Nigeria in 2026: the best handwork and digital skills, with data
Solar, plumbing, tiling, phone repair, driving and digital skills: which skills Nigerians pay for in 2026, what they earn and what it costs to learn.
By Gikswork team · Published 6 Nov 2026 · 12 min read
Many lists of "best skills to learn in Nigeria" are guesses. This one sticks to evidence: import data, government programmes, telecoms figures, industry research and published rates. Where we could not find data for a trade, we say so plainly.
Which skills are most in demand in Nigeria in 2026?
Here is the summary. Details, sources and earnings follow below.
| Skill | Evidence of demand | Published pay (where found) | Cost to learn (where found) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar and inverter installation | Record 1,721 MW of panel imports, 12 months to June 2025 (Ember) | Job based, see worked example below | ₦150,000 for a one-month course (RETTI) |
| Plumbing | Builders report a shortage of skilled artisans (Nairametrics, Feb 2025) | ₦10,000 to ₦22,000 a day | Free through ITF SUPA if selected |
| Tiling, POP and plastering | Foreign artisans often hired for these trades (Nairametrics, Feb 2025) | Tiler ₦12,000 to ₦18,000 a day | Free through ITF SUPA if selected |
| House electrical work | Band A tariff rose from ₦66 to ₦225 per kWh in April 2024, pushing solar and rewiring work | Not found | Free through ITF SUPA if selected |
| Phone and laptop repair | 195.1 million active phone lines, July 2026 (NCC) | Not found | Not found |
| Driving and delivery | Ride-hailing is 24% and e-commerce 38% of about 3 million gig workers (Bolt and Ipsos, 2026) | Not found | Driving licence costs vary |
| Digital skills | 3MTT trained 135,000+ and has 1.8 million in its pipeline (Jan 2026) | Not found | 3MTT fellowship, about 3 months |
| Tailoring, catering, hair and beauty | Large self-employed trades; no national demand data found | Not found | Usually apprenticeship |
Why is solar installation the top skill to learn in Nigeria?
Because the numbers show people are buying solar in large volumes, and every panel needs someone to install it, wire it and maintain it.
| Measure | Figure | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar panels imported by Nigeria | 1,721 MW | 12 months to June 2025 | Ember, reported by Legit.ng |
| Nigeria's rank among African importers | Second, behind South Africa | 12 months to June 2025 | Ember, reported by Legit.ng |
| Solar panels imported by all of Africa | 15,032 MW, up 60% on 9,379 MW | 12 months to June 2025 | Ember, reported by Legit.ng |
| Time for diesel savings to repay a panel in Nigeria | About 6 months | August 2025 | Ember, reported by Legit.ng |
| Band A electricity tariff | Up from ₦66 to ₦225 per kWh | 3 April 2024 | NERC, reported by Nairametrics |
| Customers in Band A | About 15% of 12 million | April 2024 | Nairametrics |
High grid tariffs and expensive diesel push homes and shops to solar. That creates steady work in installation, battery and inverter repair, and after-sales servicing.
How much does it cost to start a solar installation business?
Legit.ng published an illustrative guide in October 2026. Its numbers, which it describes as planning estimates and not guaranteed returns:
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| One-month solar PV design and installation course (RETTI) | ₦150,000 |
| One-week entrepreneurship course (RETTI) | ₦100,000 |
| Business name registration with CAC | About ₦20,000, plus a ₦1,000 name reservation |
| Small home-based solar business, starting cost | About ₦2.18 million to ₦4.7 million |
Worked example: what does a solar installer keep from one job?
Using the Legit.ng example:
- The customer agrees a ₦3,500,000 installation.
- Equipment, labour, transport and other job costs come to ₦3,050,000.
- That leaves ₦450,000 for overheads and profit.
- If your monthly overhead (shop, staff, data, fuel) is ₦600,000, two such jobs a month leave ₦300,000. One job a month leaves you ₦150,000 short.
The lesson: solar pays when you get steady jobs and price carefully. Start by working under an experienced installer, then take small jobs (a single inverter and battery) before full systems.
Are plumbers, tilers and other building artisans in demand?
Yes. In February 2025 Nairametrics reported that many Nigerian clients and developers prefer artisans from Togo, Benin and Congo for tiling, plastering, carpentry and POP, citing neater finishing and better timekeeping. The same report said economic hardship is now pushing many of those foreign artisans out, leaving a skills gap. That is an opening for Nigerian artisans who finish well and keep to time.
How much do building artisans earn per day?
These are labour-only rates from salary guides compiled by Profolio.ng, which cite Nigerian building-cost guides from 2026. Treat them as indicative, not official.
| Trade | Rate | Area | Guide date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumber, site work | ₦10,000 to ₦22,000 a day | National | 30 April 2026 |
| Plumber, site work | ₦16,000 to ₦22,000 a day | Lagos | 30 April 2026 |
| Plumber, site work | ₦14,000 to ₦20,000 a day | Abuja | 30 April 2026 |
| Plumber, standard house plumbing | ₦200,000 to ₦350,000 per job, labour only | National | 2026 |
| Tiler | ₦12,000 to ₦18,000 a day | National | 30 April 2026 |
| Tiler, straight-lay floor | ₦1,500 to ₦2,500 per square metre | National | 10 January 2026 |
| Tiler, bathroom wall with cuts | ₦2,500 to ₦4,500 per square metre | National | 10 January 2026 |
| Skilled building trades | ₦12,000 to ₦15,000 a day | Lagos | July 2026 |
| Skilled building trades | ₦8,000 to ₦10,000 a day | Northern states | July 2026 |
Worked example: what is a tiler's month worth?
- A tiler lays 40 square metres of straight floor at ₦2,000 per square metre: ₦80,000 for the job.
- Say transport, cutting discs and small tools take ₦12,000 (our example figure).
- That leaves ₦68,000 for about three days of work.
- With 12 such working days in a month, that is about ₦272,000. With only 6 days of work, it is about ₦136,000.
Finding enough days is the real challenge. That is why being easy to find and trust matters as much as the skill itself.
Is AC and refrigeration repair a good skill?
Fridges, freezers and air conditioners are everywhere in Nigerian homes and shops, and unstable power damages compressors and boards. We found no national survey that measures demand or pay for AC technicians, so we cannot give you a reliable figure. If you choose this trade, learn both installation and repair, and learn to work with inverters and solar, since more homes now run their AC on them.
Is phone repair still a good business in Nigeria?
The number of phones in use keeps growing, and every phone eventually needs a screen, battery or charging port.
| Measure | Figure | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active mobile subscriptions | 195,108,814 | July 2026 | NCC, reported by Arise News |
| Teledensity | 90% | July 2026 | NCC, reported by Arise News |
| Internet subscriptions | 157,405,351 | May 2026 | NCC, reported by ThisDay |
| Broadband penetration | 56.11% | May 2026 | NCC, reported by ThisDay |
Subscriptions are not the same as people, since many people have two lines. Still, the base keeps rising month after month. We found no reliable data on what phone repairers earn. Laptop and computer repair is a natural next step once you are good with phones.
Is driving and delivery still worth it?
A Bolt report with research firm Ipsos, published in April 2026, estimated about three million Nigerians in the gig economy, worth nearly $5.2 billion.
| Type of gig work | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|
| E-commerce (selling and delivery) | 38% | Bolt and Ipsos, April 2026 |
| Ride-hailing | 24% | Bolt and Ipsos, April 2026 |
| Freelancing | 19% | Bolt and Ipsos, April 2026 |
| Micro tasks | 10% | Bolt and Ipsos, April 2026 |
| Remote work | 10% | Bolt and Ipsos, April 2026 |
The same report found 59% of ride-hailing participants stay active for over a year, and women are only 3% of them. Fuel cost is the big risk: the report noted petrol rising from under ₦1,000 to over ₦1,200 a litre in 2026. Private drivers, delivery riders and truck drivers also need a valid licence for their class.
Which digital skills are worth learning in Nigeria?
The clearest signal is the federal Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.
| Measure | Figure | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| People trained | More than 135,000 | January 2026 | 3MTT update, reported by TechAfrica News |
| People in the 3MTT pipeline | More than 1.8 million | January 2026 | TechAfrica News |
| Long-term goal | 3 million people | Ongoing | 3MTT |
| Average course length | About 3 months, online plus in person | Ongoing | 3MTT website |
The 12 skills 3MTT chose are: software development, UI and UX design, data analysis and visualisation, data science, AI and machine learning, cloud computing, DevOps, cybersecurity, quality assurance, product management, animation, and game development.
Local businesses also hire for simpler digital work: social media management, graphic design, video editing and product photography. These need a laptop or good phone, data, and a portfolio more than a certificate.
What about tailoring, catering, hair and beauty?
These trades employ huge numbers of self-employed Nigerians, and they need less starting capital than solar or building work. But we found no reliable national data on their demand or earnings, so we will not invent any.
What we can say from the data: 85.6% of Nigerian workers were self-employed in Q2 2024 (NBS). In these trades your income depends almost entirely on repeat customers and referrals. Good photos, fair prices and keeping to delivery dates are what grow the business.
How much does it cost to learn a skill in Nigeria?
| Route | Cost | Length | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITF Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) | Free, with transport stipend | Varies by trade | Upgrade training and international certification exams for working artisans |
| 3MTT fellowship | Selected fellows | About 3 months | Training in one of 12 tech skills |
| RETTI solar PV course | ₦150,000 | One month | Solar design and installation training |
| RETTI entrepreneurship course | ₦100,000 | One week | Business basics for installers |
| Apprenticeship under a master | Varies by trade and town | Often months to years | Hands-on skill and, often, a freedom certificate |
In July 2026, ThisDay reported that the ITF began screening 225,000 working artisans across all 36 states and the FCT for SUPA, including tailors, plumbers, electricians and tilers. Training is free, and the ITF pays the master trainers directly. If anyone asks you to pay for a place, be careful.
How do I choose the right skill for me?
- Check what your town lacks. Ask landlords, estate agents and shop owners who they struggle to find.
- Count your starting money. Phone repair, cleaning and hair need little. Solar needs the most, because customers expect you to supply equipment.
- Check the power and building activity near you. Where there is new building, plumbing, tiling and POP work follows. Where power is poor, solar, inverter and generator repair follow.
- Pick a trade you can practise often. You learn faster by doing ten small jobs than by reading.
- Plan for slow months. Day rates look good, but income depends on how many days you work.
How do I start getting paid work after training?
- Work under an experienced hand first. Even three months on real sites teaches what a course cannot.
- Photograph every job. Before and after photos are your CV in the informal economy.
- Get your ID checked. Customers inviting you into their homes want to know who you are.
- Ask every happy customer for a review. Reviews bring the next job.
- Show up where people look for workers. On Gikswork you can join as a worker for free, with a free NIN or BVN check. Employers post jobs with the pay stated, and the money is held in escrow, secured by EscrowPay, until the work is done. Workers pay a 10% fee on their pay, and every finished job goes into a stamped CV you can download.
Employers looking for these trades can browse solar installers, inverter and battery technicians, plumbers, tilers, POP ceiling installers, house electricians, AC installers and repairers and phone repairers.
